10. ENGINES

2300 OHC FORD PROPOSED ENGINE RULES/GUIDELINES AS OF JULY 2008

10.1 - THE MOST IMPORTANT RULE IS TO BE AS FAIR AS POSSIBLE, TO TRY AND KEEP THE COSTS DOWN WITHOUT CREATING RELIABILITY PROBLEMS WHICH END UP NOT SAVING MONEY BUT COSTING MORE IN THE LONG RUN. WE WILL TRY TO GIVE THE DO-IT-YOURSELFER/HOME BUILDER SOME HEADS-UP ON PARTS THAT ARE PROVEN TO WORK AND SOME MACHINE WORK THAT HELPS. ALL O.E.M. PARTS/AFTER MARKET EQUIVALENCE ARE NOT THE SAME. THERE ARE SOME PISTONS, CAMSHAFTS, OIL PUMPS, HEADS, INTAKES AND RINGS THAT WORK BETTER THAN OTHERS, SO BEAR WITH US, THERE IS A DEFINITE METHOD TO OUR MADNESS. WE WOULD ALSO LIKE TO NARROW THE GAP FOR A TEAM THAT JUST GOES TO THE JUNKYARD AND FINDS A SLICK CUT OUT AND POPS IT IN, TO GET ON THE TRACK IN HOPES OF ATTRACTING A LITTLE SPONSOR HELP: EVERYBODY NEEDS THAT.

10.2 A - THE BONUS RULE: IF YOU’RE RUNNING AN ENGINE THAT HAS 165 PSI OF CRANKING COMPRESSION OR LESS ON ALL 4 CYLINDERS YOU WILL NOT BE FORCED TO ADD WEIGHT TO YOUR CAR FOR A TOTAL WEIGHT OF 2000 LBS. THE COMPRESSION TEST WILL BE DONE AT APPROXIMATELY 125 DEGREE TEMPERATURE OR LESS, AS THE PROTEST/TECH MAN DECIDES. WE WON’T ASK ANYONE TO PULL SPARK PLUGS ON RED-HOT ENGINES.

10.2 B - ENGINES HAVING 166 PSI TO A MAXIMUM OF 210 PSI MUST ADD 50 LBS. OF WEIGHT, INCREASING THEIR TOTAL WEIGHT TO 2050 LBS. AGAIN THE COMPRESSION MUST BE GOOD ON ALL 4 CYLINDERS AS WE WILL BE CHECKING CYLINDERS AT RANDOM SO DON’T TRY TO GET SLICK. IF YOU HAVE OVER 210 PSI, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO RUN UNTIL YOU DECREASE THIS WITHIN THE RANGE NEEDED.

10.3 A - CYLINDER HEAD AT THIS TIME WILL ONLY BE FORD PRODUCTION HEAD. MAYBE IN THE FUTURE THIS COULD CHANGE IF THE AFTER MARKET SHOULD OFFER SOMETHING CHEAPER AND BETTER. FOR NOW, JUST FACTORY FLAT TAPPET HYDRAULIC CAM HEADS WILL BE PERMITTED. NOTE: VALVE SPRINGS MAY BE UPGRADED TO BETTER THAN FACTORY SPECS. AFTER ALL, WE ARE GOING TO RACE THEM. SPRING RETAINERS AND KEEPERS MUST BE STEEL, NO ALUMINUM OR TITANIUM VALVE TRAIN PARTS WHAT-SO-EVER.

10.3 B - MILLING THE HEAD IS RECOMMENDED. THIS CAN IMPROVE PERFORMANCE GREATLY, BUT REMEMBER THE CRANKING COMPRESSION RULE: YOU MAY BE SHOPPING FOR SOME LEAD.

10.3 C - FACTORY O.E.M. VALVE SIZES ARE REQUIRED, NO ULTRA LIGHT AFTER MARKET STUFF, BUT AFTER MARKET O.E.M. REPLACEMENT VALVES ARE OKAY. THEY ARE LESS COSTLY AND JUST AS GOOD. INTAKE VALVE SIZE 1.739, EXHAUST VALVE SIZE 1.502.

10.3 D - YES, YOU CAN DO A COMPETITION VALVE JOB ON THE HEAD AND 2 ANGLES ON THE VALVES. THIS IS A BONE FOR THE DO-IT-YOURSELFER THAT HAS A LOT MORE TIME THAN MONEY.

10.3 E - NO PORTING. JUST THE SEAT ANGLES. BESIDES, AT THE END OF THE HEAD RULES YOU MIGHT END UP REGRETTING THE SNEAKY WORK YOU’RE CONTEMPLATING.

10.3 F - THIS RULE IS NOT MEANT TO BE A “GET EVEN WITH YOU” RULE, BUT A “LEVEL THE PLAYING FIELD” RULE FOR ALL THE RACERS. NO ONE LIKES TO SEE A DADDY WARBUCKS ALWAYS WINNING. IF YOU FINISH IN THE TOP 3 SPOTS IN THE FEATURE, YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO CLAIM ANYONE’S CYLINDER HEAD THAT FINISHED AHEAD OF YOU FOR $500 CASH PLUS THE HEAD YOU RAN IN THAT RACE. SO DON’T COME TO THE TRACK WITH SOME SUPER TRICKED-OUT HEAD: YOU MAY LOSE IT. NOTE: CAMSHAFT AND FOLLOWERS DO NOT GO WITH THE DEAL.

IF CLAIMED HEAD IS FOUND TO BE ILLEGAL, YOU WILL ADHERE TO THE PENALTY PHASE THAT FOLLOWS.

IN ORDER TO CLAIM, YOU MUST HAVE ATTENDED AT LEAST 2/3 OF THE SCHEDULED EVENTS AND WE MUST BE AT LEAST 3 RACES INTO THE SEASON.

10.4 A - CAMSHAFT AND FOLLOWERS, LASH COMPENSATORS/LIFTERS ARE FACTORY SPEC. NO ROLLER CAMS AT THIS TIME: WE WILL SEE HOW WELL FLAT TAPPET HYDRAULIC ONES HOLD UP, BUT FOR NOW HYDRAULIC O.E.M. SPEC FLAT FOLLOWERS AND CAM ARE ONLY PERMITTED.

10.4 B - CAMSHAFT WILL HAVE A MAXIMUM LIFT CHECKED AT THE VALVE OF .415. THIS CAN BE CHECKED AT DISCRETION OF A TECH OFFICIAL OR BY PROTEST OF ANOTHER DRIVER. THE COST IS $100 CASH, REFUNDABLE IF THE PROTESTED RACER IS FOUND TO BE WRONG. IF A RACER IS PROTESTED AND FOUND WRONG HE WILL FORFEIT HIS POINTS AND MONEY FOR THAT NIGHT, AND WILL BE CHECKED BY TECH BEFORE HE WILL BE PERMITTED TO RACE AGAIN.

10.4 C - NOTE: IN THE NEAR FUTURE WE WILL BE IMPLEMENTING A MINIMUM VACUUM RULE AT A SPECIFIC RPM. DON’T WORRY, WE’RE NOT TRYING TO PLAY “GOTCHA”. YOU MUST HAVE THE NECESSARY VACUUM OR YOU WILL NOT RUN SO DON’T TRY TO BE TRICKY.

10.5 A - A SHORT BLOCK WILL CONSIST OF A FACTORY O.E.M. CRANKSHAFT AND MAYBE A REGROUND (STOCK STROKE MAINTAINED). RODS FACTORY O.E.M. MAY BE RECONDITIONED, STOCK LENGTH MAINTAINED, UPGRADE ON ROD BOLTS IS RECOMMENDED BUT NOT MANDATORY. BEARINGS ROD AND MAIN MAY BE AFTERMARKET, OR O.E.M. PISTONS O.E.M. TYPE AFTER MARKET REPLACEMENT IS OKAY BUT MUST BE FLAT TOP CAST, NOT FORGED. RINGS MAY BE OVERSIZED TO MATCH PISTONS. THIS IS WHERE CHEAP DOESN’T ALWAYS SAVE MONEY. WE SUGGEST USING A GOOD SET OF RINGS: THEY LAST LONGER AND SAVE MONEY IN THE LONG RUN.

10.5 B - BLOCK MAY BE ANY YEAR BUT MUST BE CAST IRON O.E.M. ONLY. NO LIGHTENING OF BLOCK PERMITTED; BORING AND DECKING IS OKAY AS LONG AS PISTONS DO NOT RISE ABOVE THE DECK. AFTER MARKET OIL PAN AND OIL PUMP PICKUP ARE PERMITTED; OIL PUMP MAY BE O.E.M. OR AFTER MARKET REPLACEMENT TYPE; HIGH VOLUME OR HIGH PRESSURE IS FINE. BLOCKS THAT ARE BORED OVERSIZE AND MILLED AS WELL WILL INCREASE CRANKING COMPRESSION, KEEP THIS IN MIND.

10.5 C - ROTATING ASSEMBLY MAY BE BALANCED BUT NO KNIFE EDGING OR LIGHTENING OF CRANK/RODS/PISTONS BEYOND WHAT IS NECESSARY TO BALANCE THE ASSEMBLY.

10.5 D - TIMING BELT DRIVE PULLEYS MUST BE O.E.M., SINGLE KEY GROOVE. THE TIMING BELT TENSIONER MAY BE AFTER MARKET. HOW YOU INSTALL IT IS YOUR BUSINESS.

10.5 E - THE DISTRIBUTOR IS O.E.M. ELECTRONIC OR MSD TYPE ONLY, NO MAGNETOS.

10.5 F - INTAKE MANIFOLD MUST BE O.E.M. TYPE WITH AFTER MARKET ADAPTER OR SPACER PERMITTED. 350 CFM 2-BARREL CARBURETOR ONLY.

THERE WILL BE A CLAIM ON CARBURETORS SO BE CAREFUL ON WHAT YOU SPEND.

11. ENGINE CLAIMS

11.1 - PROCEDURES FOR CLAIMS OR PROTEST:

1. IN ORDER TO CLAIM, YOU MUST HAVE ATTENDED AT LEAST 2/3 OF THE SCHEDULED EVENTS AND WE MUST BE AT LEAST 3 RACES INTO THE SEASON.

2. YOU MUST RUN 3RD OR BETTER IN THE FEATURE RACE ON NIGHT OF CLAIM.

3. YOU HAVE 15 MINUTES AFTER COMPLETION OF THE RACE TO HAVE YOUR CASH DOLLARS UP TO THE TECH MAN. YOU MAY ONLY PROTEST OR CLAIM ONE ITEM PER CAR PER NIGHT OF RACING. IF THE RACER DOESN’T SURRENDER CLAIMED ITEM IN A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME TO BE JUDGED BY THE TECH MAN, THEN HIS POINTS AND MONEY FOR THE SEASON WILL BE FORFEITED.

NOTE: CLAIMS AND PROTESTS ARE NOT FOR STARTING FIGHTS BUT TO KEEP THE CARS COMPETITIVE AND TO MAKE IT AS FAIR AS POSSIBLE. SO SUCK IT UP, GUYS WITH LOTS OF MONEY ALWAYS HAVE AND ALWAYS WILL BE HARD TO BEAT.

11.2 - IN THE EVENT THAT THE TECH MAN HAS DETERMINED SOMEONE ILLEGAL, THE PENALTY WILL BE AS FOLLOWS:

1ST OFFENSE: THE DRIVER, OR TEAM WILL FORFEIT ALL WINNINGS AND POINTS FOR THAT EVENT.

2ND OFFENSE: THE DRIVER, OR TEAM WILL FORFEIT ALL WINNINGS AND POINTS FOR THE SEASON.
